If you could only pick one makeup product to wear for the rest of your life what would you choose? For me it would hands down be mascara! Y’all know by now that I love anything girly and when it comes to makeup it doesn’t get any more feminine than mascara. People always compliment me on how lucky I am to have such long lashes. Truth be told, I don’t! I probably have the shortest lashes known to mankind in real life! I just fake the length with how I apply my mascara and by finding the best mascara that works for me! Recently I realized that I had been wearing the same mascara, Smashbox Superfan, for years. I love my mascara but I was curious if it was really the best of the best! I love being a personal guinea pig for you guys so I did my research and decided to test out ten of the most popular brands on the market from drugstore brands to more expensive high end brands. The ten mascaras I tested out were it Superhero, Lancome Monsieur Big, Tarte Maneater, essence Lash Princess, Smashbox Superfan, L’oreal Telescopic Carbon Black, Too Faced Better than Sex, Benefit Bad gal lash, NARS Climax, and Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara mascara. I tried each mascara for three days to really test them out and give them all a fair review!
First let’s talk about how I get my lashes as long as possible:
- Curl: I love Brilliant Beauty Lash Prodigy Lash Curler. It’s inexpensive and old school but it fits perfectly against your lashes. This curler is almost fool proof so you don’t have to worry about pinching yourself.
- Prime: Not to prime is a crime even when it comes to lashes! Primer allows your lashes to look longer, fuller, and helps mascara stay on all day.
- Apply two coats: The trick is to apply the first coat of mascara from the base of your lashes to the tip. Then for the second coat start at the tip of your lashes and work your way down to the base. For the second coat think of applying mascara in three strokes: one at the tip of your eyelashes, one from the middle of your lash to the tip, and finally from the bottom of your lash to the tip of your lash again. It dramatically lengthens lashes!
- Use an eyelash comb: After you apply mascara use an eyelash comb to separate any lashes that might look too clumpy.
Next here are ten of the most popular mascaras that I tested. I was actually quite surprised by which ended up being my favorites! Here is how I would rank them from my least favorite to my absolute favorite!
#10- Benefit Bad Gal Lash
I was so excited to try this mascara because there has been so much hype around how great it works but sadly for me it just didn’t live up to my expectations. It does separate the lashes very well so if that is your main need you might like it but it didn’t lengthen or thicken my lashes. Right after I applied two coats it looked like I had already been wearing it all day. I hate saying that because I love this brand and love so many of their other products, like their foundation, but the mascara is a no for me.
#9- Tarte Maneater
I LOVE Tarte and I use so many of their products but this mascara didn’t do much for me. Again, I was surprised because I’ve heard that a lot of people love this mascara. I tried Maneater for a few days and every day that I applied it just left my lashes looking a little flaky.
#8- Too Faced Better Than Sex
This mascara gets the job done! It definitely holds up well throughout the day but it’s not for me because I was looking for a mascara that lengthens. The mascara is definitely a quality product I just personally prefer more drama for my lashes. If you’re looking for that soft wispy lash look this would be the mascara for you! This would also be a great mascara if you like a very natural, no makeup type of look!
#7- NARS Climax
I liked this mascara as soon as I put it on but it’s definitely more of a thickening mascara than a lengthening mascara. It also held up pretty well throughout the day. If you’re in the market for a thickening mascara this is a great option!
#6- Lancome Monsieur Big
I loved that this mascara both lengthened and thickened my lashes since it’s rare to get both in a mascara! Only con is it looked a little worn by the end of the day so I would definitely have to touch up at least once. That’s not a dealbreaker for me but I understand it may be for some people.
#5- Smashbox Superfan
Alright now this has been my go to mascara for years but if I’m being honest there were other mascaras that outperformed Smashbox. However, I will say that you can’t go wrong with any of the mascaras in my top five! They all were very impressive! This mascara lengthens and thickens and I love the dramatic look it gives! I’ll definitely still keep it in rotation for nights I want extra drama.
#4- Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara
I had never heard of this before but I love the idea of this mascara! This mascara is a separate mascara that you use just for your bottom lashes. That’s genius since bottom lashes tend to either get clumpy or smudge when we use larger mascara wands! The brush on this mascara is small enough to get into the corners of your eyes and performs really well! My lashes stayed separated and my under eye area had zero smudges at the end of the day! Such a great product to add to your makeup bag!
#3- essence Lash Princess
Love this mascara! It lengthens, separates and never looked clumpy! My lashes looked long and fresh all day! The best thing about this mascara is that it’s only $5! I couldn’t believe that it outperformed some of the higher end mascaras! If you’re on a budget this is definitely the best option!
#2- iT Superhero
I love this mascara! It makes my lashes look super long and clean. I love that it never smudges or clumps. You can also build to a more dramatic look with this mascara. It definitely looks like a high priced mascara when it’s on!
#1- L’oreal Paris Telescopic Carbon Black
MY NEW FAV! This mascara separates and lengthens lashes the most out of any of the mascaras I tried! By the end of the day it looked like I had just applied it! It didn’t smudge once over the three days I wore it! I have officially converted to this mascara. A drugstore find at only $10 this mascara can’t be beat. Rumor has it that this is also the mascara that Kim Kardashian wears.
BONUS: Lash Primers
I know I mentioned earlier that lash primer is a must so I also tried out two primers. The first is the Marc Jacobs primer. This primer was recommended by another blogger and I’ve worn it for months and always thought it worked great. It still does work great and I honestly have zero complaints about this product. However, when I bought all the mascaras to test for you guys I received a free sample of Lancome’s lash primer and this primer is soooo good! I have officially converted to this primer and my eyelashes have seriously never looked better in my entire life! Does anyone else have one eye where your lashes look so beautiful and mascara always goes on perfectly and then you put mascara on your other eye and your lashes are all over the place looking like a hot mess?! 🤣 I know I’m not the only girl this happens to! This primer literally fixes that and makes your lashes look completely identical! I don’t know how they make it work but they do!
My final verdict is that none of the mascaras were awful there were just some that way outperformed others. You won’t be disappointed with any of the mascaras in my top five or with the Lancome lash primer. I’ll link everything in my LIKEtoKNOW.it if you’re interested in getting any so you have them all in one place to browse through. My LIKEtoKNOW.it handle is Brianna Ramos. Let me know which mascara is your favorite. Wishing you all the best day!
