Large pores, wrinkles, dark spots, acne? We all have something about our skin that we wish we could improve! For me it’s blackheads and large pores! Drives me freakin nuts! We spend so much money on skin care products but what’s the point if we aren’t using them correctly and reaping the maximum benefits?! After much research I broke down the correct order to apply skincare products, tried it out on myself, and can honestly say after one month I already see a difference. Here’s what I’ve learned about the correct order to apply skincare products:
Step 1: Cleanser- Apply Day and Night
The best thing you can do for your skin is to start with a clean canvas! Skin needs to be completely clean in order for all of your products to properly absorb. In the morning clean your face with your favorite cleanser and in the evening make sure you take off ALL of your makeup. If I could give you one piece of advice for your skin it would be to never go to bed with your makeup on. Once you remove your makeup in the evening cleanse skin to get off any extra dirt and grime. If your skin tends to irritate easily skip the makeup wipes and use a cleansing oil to remove makeup. You can also double cleanse your skin which means you use a cleansing oil to remove all dirt and makeup and then a water based cleanser to really deep clean. I have a whole blog post saved about the benefits of double cleansing if you’d like to read. I highly recommend it!
Step 2 Toner- Apply Day and Night
Contrary to popular belief most toners these days are not harsh and actually have multiple benefits. Toners are great because they help minimize pores, reduce the penetration of impurities, and help maintain your skins pH balance. Toners also give your skin that refreshed feeling while getting your skin ready to absorb the rest of your skin care products more effectively. It’s best to use your toner morning and evening but if your skin is super sensitive to toners try once a day! For maximum results it’s best to use toner within one minute after cleansing.
Step 3 Serums- Apply Day and Night
Serums are the star of the skincare show and give your face a powerful punch of anti-aging ingredients! Skin can quickly and deeply absorb serums helping to brighten, reduce wrinkles, and hydrate skin. It’s super important to apply a serum before any moisturizer otherwise the thickness of a moisturizing cream can block the serum from properly absorbing into your skin. There are serums for all types of skin but for the best results dermatologist recommend using a vitamin c serum in the morning and a hyaluronic acid serum in the evening. Vitamin c is great for reducing under eye circles, evening skin tone, and brightening the skin while hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture making the skin more supple!
Step 4 Eye Creams- Apply Day and Night
The eye area can give away our age which is why it’s important to keep this delicate area in tip top shape! Eye creams are great for reducing under eye puffiness, helping prevent wrinkles, and minimizing the look of dark circles. Most eye creams also have a firming component which helps makeup go on smoother, making us look younger. And just like with our serums we want to apply our eye cream before any moisturizer!
Step 5- Spot Treatments or Treatment Serums- Apply Day OR Night
Whether you’re spot treating a pimple or working on getting rid of dark spots your spot treatments and treatment serums should ideally go on at night since your skin is repairing itself while you sleep. However, if you plan on using a retinol at night (more on that below) then it’s best to spot treat in the morning.
Step 6- Moisturizers- Apply Day and Night
Moisturizing is a must! Not only does it help lock in all of your other skincare products but the benefits are endless. Want to slow the signs of aging? Use a moisturizer. Want to fight acne? Use a moisturizer. Want to prevent wrinkles, have bright skin, and have better looking makeup? Use a moisturizer! Use a moisturizer! Use a moisturizer!
Step 7- Sunscreen- Apply Day
Applying sunscreen is by far my favorite part of my skincare routine. There’s something so satisfying about knowing I’m preventing wrinkles, reducing my risk of skin cancer, and blocking my skin from the harsh environmental chemicals. Sunscreen is a must if you want to stay looking young! Make sure to use an SPF of at least 30 that has zinc oxide in the ingredients. My favorite is elta MD skincare. You can find it on Amazon. Elta MD has an SPF 46 and is great for skin that is prone to acne and rosacea. Added perk it won’t leave your face looking shiny and greasy all day!
Step 8- Retinol- Apply Night
Retinol, our skincare savior! Once you hit 30 it’s a good time to start looking into using retinol. The benefits are endless! Reduces wrinkles, fights blackheads, helps with acne, minimizes pores, reduce appearance of sun spots, brightens dull skin, helps boost cell turnover…the list goes on and on! However, it’s important to take it slow when it comes to using retinol so your skin has a chance to adapt. It’s best to start by using a pea size amount to cover your entire face once a week for one week, twice a week for two weeks, three times a week for three weeks, and then every other night after that. Even if you’re eager to start reaping the retinol benefits be patient so that your skin can adjust. Most people like myself experience flaking or sensitivity which is why it’s important to take it slow! Sunlight can also make retinol less effective so make sure to only use at night and to wear sunscreen during the day! On days you use retinol make sure to cleanse, tone, wait 5 minutes, and then apply retinol. If you use retinol too soon after you tone it may not work as effectively! Some people apply moisturizer over their retinol but I personally prefer just to use retinol all on it’s own! If you are pregnant or breastfeeding please do NOT use retinol as it can possibly cause birth defects and please consult your doctor before adding any other product into your skincare routine!
Let me know if you try this out and how it works for y’all! Can’t wait to see your sweet glowing faces!
