If there’s one thing that’s always in style it’s healthy, radiant skin! By now you all know that I am obsessed with skincare and nothing makes a woman feel more confident than supple, glowing skin. As someone who has tried everything and anything when it comes to skincare I wanted to share with y’all my top secret tips for getting that gorgeous glow! Some of the tips are new and some of them I’ve used for years but don’t worry y’all they’re all dermatologist approved!
#1: Double Cleanse
If you want the best skin of your life double cleansing is a must!! Double cleansing is the process of washing your face with an oil based cleanser first followed by a water based cleanser second. The oil based cleanser removes all makeup, bacteria, sweat, and everyday pollutants from the skin. The water based cleanser will then come in to really dig deep in your pores and remove any impurities. Since your face is truly cleansed your skin will absorb the rest of your skincare products more effectively! Double cleansing is a lifesaver if you struggle with acne, can help reduce blackheads, and revitalizes dull skin! I have a whole blog post about double cleansing here if you’d like to check it out!
#2: Ditch The Face Wipes
Don’t kill the messenger! I know this is a tough pill to swallow but just like that bad boy ex that wasn’t good for you, face wipes are no good for you either my friend! First, they don’t actually clean your face. Yes, your makeup may appear to be removed but they smear around any and all traces of left over makeup, dirt, and dead skin leaving it to rest on your face overnight. The scrubbing movements when removing your makeup can cause irritation leaving your face worse off than before you went to bed. Think about this for a second.. when you cleanse your face you use gentle circular motions and when you use your makeup wipes your movements tend to be more harsh especially around the eye area right? All that tugging and pulling on your face is not good for your skin. Finally, face wipes contain chemicals that can strip the skin of its natural oils and protective layer which is essential for young, radiant looking skin! If possible use double cleansing in place of makeup wipes.
#3: Use Sunscreen With Zinc Oxide
Not all sunscreens are created equal! Did you know that 90% of fine lines are from the sun? Yes, you read that right, 90%!!! It’s crucial that we protect our skin from the sun if we want our skin to appear youthful. In a way having this knowledge is such a blessing because in a few simple steps we can prevent these fine lines from ever forming! You can literally tap into the fountain of youth with this information! Make sure that the sunblock you choose has an SPF of 30 or higher. Zinc oxide is a must if you wear sunblock otherwise you are wasting your money. Zinc oxide blocks all parts of the UV spectrum and sits on the surface of your skin causing harmful sun rays to literally bounce off your face. Finally, I can not stress this enough! No matter what the weather, you must wear sunscreen 365 days a year! My favorite sunscreen is Elta MD. The SPF is 46, it contains zinc oxide, and protects acne prone skin so you won’t break out! 🙌🏼
#4: Take Your Time When Applying Skincare Products
I’m going to let you in on a little secret, if you’re not letting your skincare products fully absorb into your skin you’re wasting your money! Taking your time when applying your skincare products is essential if you want glowing skin or if you want your products to work at all! If you apply your products too quickly it can counteract or dilute the next one! 😱 No one wants to spend their precious time and money on quality skincare only to find out their products aren’t working at all! I personally let each skincare product absorb for a few minutes before I move on to the next but at the very least make sure you allow your product to feel fully dry before you move on. This is especially important when it comes to toner and sunscreen! After using toner make sure to always wait five minutes before applying your next product, especially if that next product is retinol! The same rule applies to sunblock. When sunscreen is mixed with other products it becomes diluted and less effective so make sure to apply as your very last step in your skincare routine! After applying your last product wait at least a minute before applying sunscreen! Finally, before you apply makeup wait a few minutes for the sunblock to fully absorb otherwise it will be diluted slightly by your makeup and become less effective.
#5: Vitamin C Is Your Best Friend
Vitamin C is my go to for healthy, glowing skin! Even more than retinol! Yes, I said it! Vitamin C reduces dullness to give a youthful glow, protects against sun damage, prevents sagging skin, reduces under eye circles, promotes collagen production, diminishes fine lines, and protects skin from harmful free radicals caused by UV exposure. There’s nothing that Vitamin C can’t do! If there’s one tip you take from reading this it’s to add a Vitamin C product to your skincare routine. Make sure to always use your Vitamin C in the morning rather than the night for the maximum benefits. Trust me, Vitamin C is a skin game changer!! My two favorite Vitamin C products are Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder and Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum! Skinceuticals serum is a life changing product but it’s pricey at $166 a bottle! If it’s an investment you want to make Skinceuticals is the best Vitamin C product on the market and is worth every penny. However, if that’s too pricey Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder is a great alternative. I personally use Philosophy every single day with my moisturizer and this product is the sole reason I now feel comfortable leaving my house without makeup! Plus it’s only $39 a bottle and it lasts months! 🥰
#6: Treat Your Neck With The Same Care As Your Face
This may seem obvious but I feel like we often overlook our neck and chest area when it comes to good skin habits. Make sure that you are always treating your neck with the same love you show your face! Meaning cleanse, tone, moisturizer your neck as well as your face. If not, eventually your neck will give away your age even if your face is vibrant and youthful!
#7: Layer Products From Thinnest To Thickest
This is a simple but crucial rule to follow when applying your skincare products! Always layer products from thinnest to thickest. If you don’t your thicker products will create a barrier preventing your thinner products, like your eye cream, from absorbing deep into the layers of your skin! Can you imagine being on top of your skincare game only to have your products not live up to their full potential? In addition using your skincare products in the wrong order can possibly leave your skin irritated and dry. In the morning make sure to apply your products in this exact order: cleanser, toner, serums, eye cream, spot treatments, moisturizer, and then sunscreen! At night apply them in the exact same order minus the sunscreen! If using a retinol make sure to only cleanse, tone, wait five minutes, and then apply retinol. That’s it! I wrote a more detailed blog post here about why it’s so important to apply your skincare products in this order if you’d like to check it out!
#8: Don’t Touch Your Face
I am 100% guilty of face touching! I’m literally touching my face as I type this! 🤦🏻♀️ So trust me when I say I get how hard it is to stop but it’s a must if you want clear skin. Touching your face spreads dirt, oil, and bacteria around causing clogged pores and blemishes. Now to be clear if you were to stop touching your face completely it would not clear up your acne since pimples are caused from other factors. However, touching your face consistently will make your acne worse! You may notice if you constantly rest your face on your hands you’ll have an increase in breakouts in that area. You may have noticed lately a new issue of having acne around the area of your face where you place your mask. It’s the same idea, bacteria and dirt get caught in your mask, we wear it on our face, and as a result have an increase in breakouts. If you do have to touch your face make sure to clean your hands beforehand or as often as possible!
#9: Hydrate From The Inside Out
I know this goes without saying but the healthiest skin starts from the inside out! Remember our skin is the largest organ in our body and we must treat it as such. Water is the best cleanser so make sure to drink at least nine cups per day to get that glow from within! If you’re dehydrated it’s going to show on your skin. Think about a time when you’ve had one too many cocktails and how dull and tired your skin looked the next morning. It’s because of the lack of hydration! In addition to properly hydrating it’s important to effectively fuel your body. Make sure to get a variety of superfoods, antioxidants, and healthy fats if you really want to glow from within. Fruits and veggies such as blueberries, strawberries, oranges, spinach and kiwi are great for skin. Avocados, nuts, and seeds are great healthy fats that will keep your skin looking top notch!
#10: Stay Away From Heat
In addition to limiting your time in the sun it’s important to limit time from any device that emits heat such as heaters and fireplaces. The heat emitted can break down collagen and wreak havoc on your skin. Collagen is what keeps the skin from sagging, giving your skin a plump and youthful look! If you have to warm up next to a heater or fireplace try and do it at least six feet away.
#11: Exfoliate Longer, Not Harder
Exfoliation is a must if you want bright plump skin! Not only does exfoliating prevent acne but it also removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, evens skin tone, and helps your skincare products penetrate deeper into the skin making them more effective. When exfoliating skin it’s crucial to make sure that we exfoliate longer rather than harder. Scrubbing the skin too hard with any product can do more harm than good. If your skin needs a good cleansing or exfoliation softly massage skin in an upwards and outwards motion for 1-2 minutes rather than forcefully scrubbing. Massaging your skin in this method will increase circulation to the skin where as scrubbing will cause irritation, breakouts, redness, inflammation, and possibly burning. Everyone’s skin in slightly different but on average make sure to exfoliate twice a week but no more than that.
#12: Use Hydrocortisone Cream For Pimples
Here’s a little trick I learned from my dermatologist! If you have a big pimple that you need to get rid of asap there is an at home remedy to deflate the bump that’s just as effective as getting a shot of hydrocortisone in your dermatologist’s office. First, place a hot compress on the pimple for several cycles. Then apply 1% hydrocortisone cream and let it sit for two hours before you wash off. Aveeno hydrocortisone anti-itch cream works great and is only $5!
#13: Invest In A Facial Scrubber Brush
Facial scrubbers are great for getting off all those dead skin cells without removing healthy cells! They are great at giving your skin a healthy glow without stripping away the top level of your skin which is crucial to protect your skin from the sun and to keeping skin moisturized. Here’s one of my favorite facial brushes from Vanity Planet. Make sure to use code BECONFIDENT for 45% off!
#14: Don’t Overuse Your Product
Using too much product can not only be wasteful but can cause the product to be ineffective. In addition using too much can cause breakouts and clogged pores. Make sure to use small amounts for best results. Extra bonus is that our products will last longer saving us some money!
#15: Wait 6-8 Weeks Before Deciding If A Product Works
Keep in mind that in most cases if a product promises an instant glow it’s usually because the product will give you a superficial result and not long term benefits! If a skin care product is doing work on a cellular level (ex: increasing collagen production) it will need more time to produce results. That doesn’t mean it’s not working, it just means that it’s working to give you long lasting results! And don’t forget that sometimes products that are great for your skin will also seem as if they are wreaking havoc on your face in the beginning. You may notice breakouts in areas you’ve never seen breakouts but that’s just your skin purging! Purging is a GREAT thing because it means your new products are causing your skin to a have a high cell turnover rate leaving your skin with fresh younger looking skin in the long run! Patience is key! This is why it’s so important to wait 6-8 weeks to determine if we like a product. We never want to toss a product that was actually doing amazing things for our skin too prematurely!
